Rooftop Reimagined

Frederick, MD • Design Build Partner: Lighthouse Craftsman

It’s not often that we have the chance to design a home’s exterior space. In this case, we had the great fortune to design a rooftop deck.

Our client  has a townhome in the heart of the Frederick historic district. The rooftop access offers outstanding views of the city’s architecture and a nearby park. And though surrounded  by historical buildings, this is an early 2000s build–which makes for a less complicated design/build process.

The space started as a typical city rooftop; nondescript, functional, and basically a blank slate for design. With no yard for entertaining, our client wanted to transform the roof into a place for entertaining and enjoying the panoramic views.

This unique project requires a lot of custom work to accommodate the atypical square footage. Together with Lighthouse Craftsman, we designed and built different zones; the main gathering place includes a pergola, bench, bar, and firepit area complete with outdoor TV. The dining zone boasts a stunning, rustic industrial handcrafted table. The surrounding railings and perimeter walls have been crafted to provide safety, privacy, and good looks. At the base of the rooftop access, a small area outside off the third floor has been fitted with an outdoor grilling station. Storage is cleverly stashed behind planked walls. The mixture of woods, metals, Virginia Mist granite, and upholstered seating creates visual interest that works in harmony with the surrounding outdoors.

The overall effect is a relaxed place to grill, feast, enjoy cocktails, watch the game, take in fireworks or town parades…it’s a whole new level for this lovely Frederick home.
