Making the New Old Again

Our clients chose a newer (10 years old) townhome in downtown Frederick, wishing to avoid the potential issues that accompany renovating more vintage homes. The somewhat vanilla home needed an infusion of character, so their wish list included the details and charm of a classic older row home in Frederick’s historic district.

Tuscan Blue Design was brought in to reimagine the first and second floors, and the transformation is lovely. On the first floor, we designed the kitchen as the main attraction--and it truly is a cook’s dream. Miles of classic shaker cabinets in neutral tones were accented with fretwork inserts, mixed metal finishes, and countertops in quartz and Caesarstone. In lieu of a dining table, the six-seat island works nicely for entertaining friends. Other special elements include chef-worthy appliances, dual sinks, and a fabulous, fully-stocked bar with beverage cooler.

The former front dining space  was transformed into a piano room, complete with a new gas fireplace, custom bookcases, and cozy chairs to curl up in front of the fire. The neutral tones were given texture with round-cut white marble on the fireplace surround and a thick, woven rug.

On the second floor, we redesigned the bedrooms, closets, bathrooms, and laundry area to create a better flow and maximize the spaces. In the Primary bath, Old World touches were added in the basketweave marble flooring, tiling details, and vintage-feel lighting and fixtures. The hall bath also features the basketweave floor, and some 1920s-inspired details in the shower tile. More vintage-feel lighting and fixtures kept the design continuity. The Primary bedroom reflects our client’s love of color, with walls in a saturated blue-green and a patterned hooked rug. An elegant upholstered bed marries well with the wood nightstands and footboard bench.

It can be tricky to take a newer build and give it an authentic vintage feel. Tuscan Blue Design collaborated with the clients to ensure that every detail added up to a stylish, elegant space that feels like a historical home with modern amenities.
