No-Fuss Formal

Kitchen & Casual Dining Design/Build Build Partner: Lighthouse Craftsman

A Family Space with An Elegant Personality

We see a lot of kitchens in need of redesign, and each one has its own particular challenges–which we consider opportunities for innovation. This dated kitchen was no different. The clients wanted more light, a large island, and a style that leaned toward traditional, flirted with formality, and maintained a no-fuss feel for the whole family.

To accommodate the desire for a family kitchen, we had to design the space to fit a larger fridge, two dishwashers, a small under-counter fridge for the kids, and plenty of seating and prep space. With an entrance from the garage and an exit through sliders to the backyard, we came up with a plan that allowed for flow, function, and beauty–all within the client’s budget.

To create a traditional but custom look, we utilized cabinetry with simple X accents, a unique hood vent designed by Tuscan Blue Design and built by Lighthouse Craftsman, richly-toned hardwood flooring, a marble backsplash, and endless delightful details.

This is a cook’s kitchen, so we chose high-quality appliances, but didn’t go over the top in order to stay on budget (and splurge elsewhere). Custom open shelving provides useful and accessible storage. Two new windows were added to flood the space with sunlight.

The brass light fixtures are different but harmonious, and play well with the mixed metal cabinetry hardware. The stunning herringbone marble backsplash and artisan glazed subway tiles are subtle and luxurious, and let the details of the space stand out. Quartz countertops in gray for the perimeter and white for the island add elegance and low maintenance.

One of our favorite design elements from this space is the casual dining area. Our clients wanted built-in bench seating, so we got creative and utilized the space between the kitchen and family room to create a knee wall with bench seating. This allowed for a natural transition between rooms without taking away the open feel.

The before and after of this lovely kitchen is quite a contrast. We went from dark and dated to airy and elegant. The kids can feel comfortable gathering here for snacks and homework, and the adults can feel comfortable entertaining friends or cooking dinner for two. With the right design and a great design/build team, a dream kitchen can come true–and even stay on budget.
